Newfoundland-based Severn Glocon Atlantic Canada has strengthened its team with the appointment of experienced valve engineer Dan Vatcher.

Currently seconded to Suncor Energy’s East Coast Terra Nova project, Dan performs the role of Valve Discipline Responsible Engineer. He oversees valve management and the resolution of technical issues as well as ongoing maintenance and inspection.

Terra Nova is a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) asset that has been operational since 2002. It is more than half way through its 20 year design life, and investigations are currently underway to establish whether it can continue to operate beyond 2022 into a period of life extension.

The FPSO has around 25,000 valves. Optimising their performance will play a critical role ensuring Terra Nova continues to operate reliably and safely if its life is extended.

Carl Schofield, Director of Severn Glocon Atlantic Canada, has been project managing valve impacts as part of the Terra Nova life extension and H2S readiness projects. He explains:

“With the right level of expertise, it is possible to maintain or even improve the performance of valves in the field. Our sister company Severn Unival has a strong track record enhancing the performance of valves on ageing North Sea assets. Dan will leverage his experience in conjunction with Repair Intelligence data from Severn Unival. This will underpin an effective valve management strategy that stands the test of time if Terra Nova’s life is extended. With more than two decades’ valve engineering experience behind him, Dan is well placed to handle this project.”

The Terra Nova field is located offshore, approximately 350km southeast of St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. One of the largest FPSO vessels ever built, the Terra Nova FPSO is 292.2 metres long and 45.5 metres wide, approximately the size of three football fields laid end to end. From the keel to the helideck, it stands more than 18 storeys high. The Terra Nova FPSO can store 960,000 barrels of oil and accommodate up to 120 personnel while producing.
